“Endangered Samplers” series

What started as a discovery of new embroidery stitches developed into a study of our local endangered species. This is the first time I am using my sewing skills to create more than just embroidered tablecloths and other fancy domestic linens. I have been embroidering since I was 5 and sewing cloth since I was 8. On every long trip, I have always carried something to stitch to pass the time.

A sampler is a piece of fabric that one usually learned to embroider on with a fancy saying (Home Sweet Home). The idea that quilters have often made political statements in subtle ways on their works has always intrigued me. With these thoughts in mind, I began my samplers with 8 never used family napkins. On each I created an image of one of our local endangered species. I used paint, embroidery, felting, appliqué. Once the samplers were completed, I painted twig- like images on bleached recycled curtain fabric. I mounted each samplers onto the fabric and using dowels to created a scroll.

In our ever changing world where so many of us move about, one can roll these scrolls up and take with.
